The Western Black Bear Workshop has been providing a forum for bear managers, research biologists, and others to share information about bear research and management from Central America to Canada since 1979.

The 12th Workshop will take place in Canmore, Alberta, hosted by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development and the Alberta Conservation Association.

The theme of the 2015 Workshop - “Managing Bears in Socially Diverse Landscapes” – is highly relevant to our region. Dr. Steve Herrero will deliver the opening keynote address, “Understanding black bear aggressive behavior”.

Other highlights include:

  • Interactive review of jurisdictional management with Dr. Joseph Clark
  • Evening session on Orphan Cubs and Rehabilitation
  • Panel and workshop on Bear Conflict Management in the Private Sector
