Pledge to share space with wildlife

Animals need your help!

Did you know that along the spine of the Rocky Mountains from Yellowstone National Park to Canada’s Yukon, you can find the same large wildlife — bison, cougars, wolves, grizzly bears, and more — that have been living in North America for thousands of years? It is one of the things that makes this 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) region unique.

This landscape is home for many animals, large and small, and offers a wide range of ways for people to experience it. But as more people explore these scenic places, their potential to cross paths with wild animals increases. Ultimately, this fosters a dangerous situation for animals and humans, putting lives at risk.

With bears moving throughout the region in places we also play, chances are you could encounter one. There are numerous ways to prevent and react to encounters with bears. One of the most important things you can do is carry bear spray. Bear spray is a proven deterrent that helps prevent injury to both you and the bear. Carrying bear spray isn't enough on its own though; to responsibly explore in bear country, it's important to follow all the bear safety recommendations specific to the area you are in.

We know you love bears and other wildlife and want to keep them (and yourself!) safe, so we encourage you to do your part. Take the pledge and carry bear spray when you are recreating in bear country in the Yellowstone to Yukon region or beyond.

Take the pledge. Tell your friends and family. Share space with wildlife.

While visiting and recreating in bear country throughout the Yellowstone to Yukon region and elsewhere, I pledge to:

  • Be bear aware and carry bear spray in an accessible spot;
  • Learn how to deploy bear spray and;
  • Recreate safely by keeping up-to-date on bear activity and trail closures.
